The Two Merchants.
Once, there were two merchants who sold necklaces by carrying a package of the necklaces on their shoulder around villages. Their characters were very different from each other. One was greedy and dishonest and another was honest and compassionate. One day, the two merchants were selling their necklace in the same way in a village but the greedy merchant went first and the honest one after. After a while selling the necklaces, the Greedy merchant met a poor old woman with her small granddaughter who really wanted to have a necklace from him, but the poor old woman and her small granddaughter had nothing except an old dirty colorless cup. They said to the merchant that they wanted to exchange the cup for one of his small necklaces. When the merchant examined the cup, he saw it was a valuable golden cup. However, he was wicked and greedy. He wanted to have the golden cup without giving any necklace. Then he told the old woman and the child that the cup was valueless and not equal to even a small necklace. Actually he wanted the woman throw the cup away and thought that he would return the same way and could pick it up. Before long he left the old woman and the child, the honest merchant arrived in front of the old woman’s house. Again, the old woman and her small granddaughter tried to exchange the cup for a small necklace but this time with the honest merchant. As an honest merchant, he said after examining the cup that it was a golden cup and was more valuable than all the necklaces on his shoulder. So he said that it was not fair to exchange it for any of his necklaces and gave it back to the old woman. As the old woman and the child wanted to honour his honesty, they however gave the golden cup to him. He also gave the woman and the child all his necklaces. After he happily left the woman and the child, the greedy merchant came back to the previous spot where the woman and the child were and knowing that the cup was carried by the second merchant, he immediately ran after the second merchant but the second merchant had already gone to the other side of the river bank. Then the greedy merchant cried out, “Give me back my golden cup! Give me back my golden cup! …
As he cried out loud repeatedly which lasted for a long time, the greedy merchant gradually tired and died of a broken heart.
The moral is : Do not be greedy. have nothing want nothing.
